PRESS RELEASE

30 June 2009
TIME EMBARGO:    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HIGHLAND COUNCIL BUDGET CUTS ANNOUNCEMENT
Unison is obviously concerned by the Highland Councils announcement that Staff will be at risk due to funding shortfalls. It is even more worrying that they have chosen to make these announcements without any hard facts especially at a time when the economy is under pressure and people are already worried about their futures.

The Highland Council is only half way through the Job Evaluation process and staff morale is already at low without hearing of these further threats to their livelihoods

The dedicated and diverse workforce that the employer is threatening are the single most valuable asset they have and these staff currently deliver Council services under great pressure. Let’s not forget that they are also major contributors to the Highland economy and are at liberty to give their verdicts on politicians decisions via the ballot box like everyone else

The thought of further reductions in staffing is frightening to our members when they are already working in some under resourced services. Unison will work closely with the employer to try and ensure that any cuts they propose do not see people lose their jobs. Unison have already made it clear to the Highland Council that our members do not support the expenditure on bi lingual signing by local and central government lets see that money diverted to protect jobs and services.
